Intel releases the XMM 8060, its first commercial 5G modem.
The 5G modem supports both full non-standalone and standalone new radio (NR), as well as several 2G, 3G and 4G legacy modes. The company states that using the XMM 8060, 5G communication in both sub-6 GHz and millimeter wave global spectrum bands is possible.
Commercially available in 2019
Intel is planning to ship commercial customer devices of the XMM 8060 in mid-2019. The device is a key building block in Intel’s strategy for offering end-to-end 5G solutions from the network, through the cloud to endpoints.
Early 5G Trials
Earlier this year (at the CES 2017 show), Intel released announced its first 5G silicon solution with a 5G modem baseband chip paired with a 5G transceiver. This early solution enabled making calls in the mmWave band at 28 GHz, and provided the foundation for initial 5G trials with select partners.
